Spartan gymnasts nab third at home invitational

Coming into their home invitational on Saturday, the Connersville Lady Spartans had few illusions that they would win the meet.

Joining them inside the Connersville High School gymnasium were Columbus North and Northwestern two schools with a lot of tradition behind them.

So it was no surprise that those two teams claimed the top two spots by the time all of the tumbling was finished.

Columbus North finished with 110.775 points, and Northwestern was right on their tail with 109.175.

The battle for third place was just as hot.

“Richmond came in with determination to beat us,” Connersville head coach Joann Borders said, referring back to a recent dual between the two teams, won by CHS, 102.125 to 101.47.

On Saturday, the result was very similar, as Borders’ charges claimed the bronze spot in the standings with a score of 101.925. Richmond was close, earning a 101.850 total.

Following those four were teams from Roncalli (98.6), Noblesville (97.5), Franklin Central (97.025), Centerville (66.375), Morristown (62.850) and Brebeuf Jesuit (59.175).

Borders pointed out that the margin between the Lady Spartans and Lady Red Devils could have been larger.

“We did not hit vault and bars like we needed to, but Ali (Sargent), Katelyn (Burris) and Allison (Hoffman) performed well on the beam to help us stay in the competition against Richmond,” she said.

Hoffman’s vault score was a personal best, as she contributed an 8.775 to the CHS total.

On the beam, that trio of Spartans got hot, as Hoffman (9.025), Burris (8.6), Sargent (8.475) and Burris (8.6) put a charge into Connersville’s score.

Hoffman’s beam score wound up being good enough for fourth in the over all standings.

That also propelled the freshman to her highest all-around score, as she finished with a 34.25, good enough for 10th-place among the entire field.

“It was an exciting competition,” Borders summed up. “Columbus North and Northwestern had great skills and good routines.”

Richmond is one of the teams Connersville will see at the sectional meet at Spartan Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 24. Other teams that will be in attendance at the sectional include Cambridge City Lincoln, Centerville, Knightstown, Morristown, Muncie Burris, Muncie Central, New Castle, New Palestine, Pendleton Heights, Rushville Seton Catholic, Shelbyville, Southwestern (Shelbyville), Union County and Waldron.

“The competition is going to be very tough at this sectional,” Borders warns.
