Double duty dribblers

By GRADY TATE - gtate@newsexaminer.com

There isn’t much history between the Connersville High School girls basketball team and its opponent on Saturday, Guerin Catholic, who comes to Spartan Bowl for the first half of doubleheader action with the CHS boys.

The same can’t be said for tonight’s foe, however, as the Lady Spartans travel to Franklin County for an Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference tilt.

Last season, the Lady Spartans traveled to play the Class 3A Golden Eagles, and came away with a 55-36 victory, CHS’ first win of the 2016-17 campaign. It was also the start of a streak in which Connersville won seven of 10 games.

Now, coming off a lopsided loss to Columbus East, Connersville comes into Saturday night’s game in hopes of kicking off another successful string.

Guerin comes into the contest with two wins on the season, one over Shelbyville and the other over Franklin County.

Before the Spartans can cast their eyes toward the Lady Eagles, they must first tend to the Lady Wildcats tonight.

Waiting for them in Brookville will be the McCool twins, Kamryn and Kendall.

Kamryn is the current leading scorer for FC in 2017-18. She averages 11.5 points per contest, but already lists a 29-point performance against Switzerland County among her accomplishments this season.

Kendall averages 7.4 tallies per night, but has four double-digit games under her belt. Each is a candidate every game of putting a double-double in the books, both as scorers and rebounders.

Megan Getz is the second-leading scorer for the ‘Cats, averaging 8.8 points per night.

The game against FC carries some significance, as both are searching for their first EIAC win of the season. The two teams are the lone squads that are winless in the conference.

Similar to Franklin County, the Golden Eagles have one player averaging double figures.

Sydney Geis gets that distinction, the senior scoring 11.1 tallies per game. Her best effort came against Franklin County, a game in which she scored 20 points.

Nicole Cunningham adds some scoring for Guerin, the sophomore averaging 7.5 points per night.
