Spartan boys finish second, girls third, at EIAC swim meet

By GRADY TATE - gtate@newsexaminer.com

AURORA — East Central proved it was the cream of the crop among Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference swim teams, when six of the eight league teams gathered at South Dearborn High School on Saturday.

Both the Trojan girls and boys won their respective meets by large margins, the girls earning 319 points, and the boys finishing the day with 355.5.

The Connersville Spartans were also very competitive throughout the day, the girls following the Lady Pirates from Greensburg (2nd, 271) in third place with 245 points.

Following the Lady Spartans in the standings were teams from Batesville, South Dearborn and Lawrenceburg.

The CHS boys finished one rung higher than their female counterparts, totalling 284 points to trail only the Trojans.

Greensburg was third, followed by South Dearborn, Lawrenceburg and Batesville.

In addition to the lofty perches among the team standings, both Spartan teams landed several individual competitors among the All-Conference ranks.

For the girls, Audra Volz earned that status with her first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, that win coming after she had helped teammates Grace Newman, Ryleigh Loper and Macie Weiler touch first in the 200 freestyle relay event. Weiler also earned an All-EIAC nod following her win in the 50 freestyle.

“Third was about what I expected from the girls, though I was pleased to see that we moved spots in a few events,” Connersville coach Darrell Drew said. “For example, Macie was seeded second in the 50 free, but had a great swim to win it.”

Weiler earned the win by the slimmest of margins, finishing with a time of 26.02 to beat out favorite Olivia Nixon from East Central, who touched in a time of 26.03. Weiler was also second in the 100 freestyle.

The boys were led by two-time All-Conference individual performer Zane Spurlock, the CHS senior winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle (he was seeded third in the 100).

But that wasn’t all.

Spurlock then teamed with James Smith, Mason Stevens and Hutton Getz to win the 200 freestyle relay, giving Connersville a sweep in that event. For his efforts, Spurlock was named the EIAC’s most valuable swimmer.

The individual honors didn’t end there for CHS, as Peyton Keaffaber was named All-Conference, due to a pair of runner-up finishes, one in the 200 IM and the other in the 100 breaststroke.

“I thought that Peyton turned in one of the better meets that he’s every had,” Drew said. “He was in position to win both of those events, he just got out-touched at the very end in each of them.”

In addition, on Friday night, freshman Quinton Jones earned All-Conference status in his first EIAC meet appearance, winning the diving competition by nearly a dozen points, finishing with 392.45 points. For the girls, CHS’ Jennifer Geise was runner up to East Central’s Aly Bailey.

Though not an All-Conference selection for the boys, Justin Kidd caught the eye of his coach.

“He just had an amazing swim in the 200 free (3rd place),” Drew said. “I didn’t even know that he could swim that event that fast. Neither did he.

As a team, Drew said he was really pleased with how both teams performed on the day.

“I thought we looked pretty good throughout the meet,” he said. “I think we can go to our sectionals with some encouragement after this meet.

“Over all, I was impressed with both teams.”
