Phillip Fay Junkins

Phillip Fay Junkins, 82, passed away on July 7, 2018 at home.

He was born on May 5, 1936 in Springersville, IN to Fay Lawrence and Claudia (Wilson) Junkins. Phillip grew up in Springersville, IN. After high school, he joined the US Navy in 1958 and served for 10 years. He served in Vietnam aboard the USS Tolovana AO-64, a fuel tanker. While serving aboard, they were a part of the lifeline on the Pacific Ocean when President Eisenhower flew to the Philippines. A ship was stationed every 100 miles below the flight of the plane. Phillip served aboard the USS Burton Island AGB-1, an icebreaker, making two cruises each to the North and South Poles; the USS Mauna Kea AE-22, ammunition ship; the USS Richmond K Turner CG-20, the fifth ship in the Leahy class of guided missile cruisers; the USS Caddo Parish LST-515, a landing transport ship, stationed in Vietnam, moving supplies up the inland rivers to US Army outposts. All these ships served in the Pacific Fleet. He also served two years of shore duty at Great Lakes Training Center, North Chicago, Lake County, Illinois.

Phillip was a member of St Paul’s & Peace Lutheran Church, Democratic Party, American Legion, VFW, FFA, 4-H Clubs and US Merchant Marine. Also a Charter Member of the Whitewater Genealogy Association, USS Burton Island AGB-1 Association, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Wm. P Benton Camp 28, Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana and the Sons of American Revolution, Clarence A Cook Chapter, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, elected as Deacon of Peace Lutheran Church, Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana in June 2003 and 2006. He is a gardener and genealogist. He was a fencing contractor and auto parts warehouseman before his retirement.

Phillip married Mary Margaret Miller in 1958. They had one child, Jeffrey Phillip Junkins. Phillip and Mary divorced in 1961.

Phillip was preceded in death by his only son, Jeffrey Phillip Junkins, his parents, Fay Lawrence & Claudia (Wilson) Junkins, a brother, James Keith Junkins, paternal grandparents, George Washington & Iva Alice (Scholl) Junkins and maternal grandparents, Clarence Denver & Katherine Sidney (Wiley) Wilson.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Richard Jay & Janet (Richardson) Junkins of Gainesville, Florida, his grandchildren, Ryan Jeffrey Junkins and Jaclyn Paige Junkins, sister-in-law, Carol Sue (Madison) Junkins, aunt, Edna (Harris) Wilson, a daughter-in-law, Lori Junkins, several nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation for Phillip will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018, from 11:00am until 1:00pm, at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home, Connersville. The funeral service will follow at 1:00pm at the funeral home.
